Haircuts for Homeless
Haircuts4Homeless is a UK-wide initiative which provides homeless people with free haircuts to help them look and feel better.
Haircuts4Homeless is a community group set up by hairdresser Stewart Roberts to help improve low self-esteem felt by homeless people. A haircut can have a great effect on how someone looks and feels but it is not something that is affordable or a main priority for people in housing crisis.
The project, supported by the National Lottery, started in Havering, East London in November 2014 and now operates in around 50 locations across the UK with more than 250 volunteers. The project now provides 13,000 haircuts a year with more than 35,000 cuts donated since the scheme began.
The funding has provided hair dressing materials including branded gowns and helped expand the project's social media presence which is used to raise awareness of the emotional difficulties faced by homeless people.
