Sandy Bremner
Sandy is the Convener of the Cairngorms National Park Authority, Britain’s biggest national park.
Sandy was BBC Scotland's Managing Editor for the North East and Northern Isles until 2018. He is now Convener of the Cairngorms National Park Authority, Britain’s biggest national park. Leading transformative projects in an area bigger than Luxembourg, Sandy and his colleagues are currently working with land managers, conservation organisations, and the people who live and work in the national park to deliver nature restoration on a landscape scale.
The Cairngorms 2030 programme, supported by National Lottery funding, aims to improve biodiversity and tackle the challenges of climate change. It will make the Cairngorms the first net zero national park in the UK. The initiatives include woodland, peatland and river restoration, helping native species including some which are currently on a path to local extinction. The programme covers a range of interconnected projects, from support for an outdoor dementia resource centre to the creation of new paths promoting active travel.
Sandy has a strong focus on working with communities, and a determination that people and nature should thrive together at a time of major challenges for both. Nominated in the heritage category, the National Park is working to protect and enhance people's natural and cultural heritage for current and future generations.
Sandy said: "The National Lottery has been instrumental in many crucial projects, including work to make the Cairngorms the first net zero National Park in the UK. With continued support from the National Lottery, the National Park will continue to deliver transformational change, benefitting people’s health and wellbeing, addressing climate change and enhancing nature for future generations."
