The Ecology Centre
The Ecology Centre in Fife offers environmental education, volunteering and training opportunities to people of all ages and abilities.
The Ecology Centre sits on the banks of Kinghorn Loch in Fife. The charity began 20 years ago as an initiative by locals to develop the loch for community use and it has evolved into a multi-faceted organisation with environmental and educational principles at its heart.
National Lottery funding paid for its new home on a two-hectare site to provide meeting and office spaces, plus a workshop and classroom made from second-hand shipping containers. The money was awarded two weeks before the 15 year lease on the charity's previous home was due to expire and saved the day.
"Our future was looking bleak a few years ago. But two years on from moving into our new home it has never been in a better position in terms of resources, outlook and aspirations for making a positive difference to people’s lives and the natural environment."
General Manager David Stockwell
A wife of one attendee says: "He looks forward to coming to the Tool Shed so much that if he knows it's his day for going there, he is up and dressed and waiting for me to bring him really early. Most other days he is still lying in his bed and not interested in getting up. The transformation has been amazing."
