The Tetley
The iconic home of brewing in Leeds has been transformed into a spectacular centre for contemporary art that champions new talent
The Tetley name has been synonymous with Leeds for almost 200 years, ever since Joshua Tetley founded his brewery in the city’s South Bank area.
His cask ale would become a top seller globally, with the brewery in Leeds employing a thousand people at its height.
In 1931, the company built a spectacular Art Deco head office at the site but by 2010 it stood deserted after Carlsberg took over the brand and moved production elsewhere.
With the help of National Lottery funding, arts organisation Project Space Leeds has breathed new life into this iconic building, while preserving an important part of the city’s social and industrial history.
The Tetley is now a pioneering centre for contemporary art with exhibition, events and learning spaces, a café, community facilities and resources for artists.
What stands it apart from other modern destination galleries is the focus on emerging artists and new talent, giving them a platform to reach a wider audience.
This applies as much to under-fives as it does to professional and international artists, with mentoring and workshops for all ages and abilities.
Since opening in 2013, The Tetley has supported the work of more than 550 artists and welcomed more than 600,000 visitors through its doors.
It has also helped to create 30 new artworks, which have toured major festivals around the UK, and maintains an archive of material from the brewery’s past, from photographs and silverware to marketing materials and tools.
National Lottery funding continues to support the work of The Tetley, recently helping with an exhibition exploring and celebrating the legacy of the Leeds West Indian Carnival.
