Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub
Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub (GSNH) is a truly inspirational community facility located in Warrington. Replacing a tired 1970’s leisure centre, GSNH has been transformed into a state-of-the-art community, sport, library and health facility. It is to become the first public building in the WORLD to achieve Gold Accreditation for Dementia Design.
Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub (GSNH) is a state-of-the art community, sport, library and health facility. Sport England supported the project with £1.5 million of National Lottery Funding, towards the £16 million renovation.
The facility includes a 21st century library, a luxury health and wellness spa, conferencing facilities, three group fitness spaces, fully refurbished swimming pools and sports hall, a 120-station fitness suite with Inclusive Fitness Initiative equipment and functional training space.
Dementia is a key and growing issue in Warrington and the design of the building has taken this into consideration. The facility is to become the first public building in the WORLD to achieve the University of Stirling’s Gold Accreditation for Dementia Design. The facility’s dementia-friendly features include natural and artificial lighting, specifically designed signage and floor finishes, accessible toilets and a ‘quiet room’.
More recently LiveWire, that operates the facility, has launched its dementia-friendly activity programme which includes specifically designed group exercise classes, quiet hours in the gym and dementia-friendly swimming times. LiveWire is committed to developing people’s understanding of dementia and how it affects people and provide opportunities for people living with dementia to lead an active lifestyle.
The luxury garden spa which opened in February also embraces the health and wellbeing offer with specialist treatments and products available that are suitable for people with dementia as well as people undergoing cancer treatment.
