The Granite City Guerillas
The Granite City Guerrillas' use dodgeball to encourage the Aberdeenshire community to come together for good.
Dodgeball isn’t the first sport that comes to mind when you think of Aberdeen, but that hasn’t stopped the Granite City Guerrillas. They are on a mission to boost the game and to make the sport accessible to everyone regardless of their personal circumstances.
We're always open to everyone - any skill level, gender or anything else!
Granite City Guerrillas club Secretary, Pete Watt
The project initially targeted women by running a 'ladies night' once a week. Success for the club and the sport in Scotland has snowballed from there. Two of the club's female players were named in the Scotland squad for the UK Dodgeball Association Six Nations Tournament in 2016 and now seven female club members are in contention to play for Scotland in the 2017 European Championship.
National Lottery funding has also allowed the club to offer free dodgeball to those who have been made redundant.
Lindsay-Anne, 33, started playing for the Granite City Guerrillas in 2016. She says: "I lost my job not long after joining the Guerrillas but thankfully they provide free training and practice for those who have become or are already unemployed.
"I have been selected twice for the Scotland squad. I've lead the Guerrilla's team to a bronze medal at our last charity tournament, fourth position in the Scottish league and to gold in the first ever Scottish Ladies Championship.
Dodgeball has remained a constant in my life and kept up my morale during a really difficult time."
